Another 1:1 Linux Laptop School District
I had heard it through the grapevine but actually had a chance to hear it from the horse's mouth. San Diego Unified School District is doing a 1:1 laptop program with Linux. It is only in pilot form now but I had the opportunity to meet Jordan Zebor, a Distance Learning and Digital Media Specialist here at Brainshare. Though they don't have a posting on it yet, you can learn about all sorts of exciting 21st Century learning projects they are doing at http://edtech.sandi.net. I'm the Project Manager for the Always-On Learning Initiative in San Diego Unified School District. And yes, we have just started a long-term three phase plan to bring 1:1 mobile computing to over 100,000 3rd-12th graders in my district. (You may call me a dreamer, but I'm not the only one)
Right now, we have just begun Phase One, a pilot project with nine teachers - 2 elementary, 2 middle and 5 high school teachers. The pilot is a schools based project and the laptops don't go home with the kids, yet (Phase 3). The build one laptop is a Lenovo R60 with Celeron processor using Novell's Linux SLED 10.
